Envelope Teaser Copy

If you’re running a direct mail campaign, where you send out your sales piece to large numbers of people via the post office, there are several different kinds of headlines that come into play. There’s the headline at the top of the sales letter itself, but if you’re sending your letter in an envelope, the first thing your recipient sees won’t be the headline. That’s when you need to do something clever that will get readers to open that envelope in the first place.

One way is to put teaser copy on the envelope, which is very much like a headline. It’s also comparable to putting an enticing subject line on an email to get people to click through. You want it to hint at some kind of benefit the person will receive by opening the envelope. They will find important news, a money-saving coupon, or a solution to some difficulty that’s been bothering them. Maybe they’ll find the solution to their money problems or a magic elixir that will make them look younger. The copy could consist of one strong line: “Your Free Gift Inside!” Or it could be a strong line with additional points, maybe in the form of bullet points:
